Narwal Freo X Ultra

The Freo X Ultra, a highly rated and extremely functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop is a well-built machine. The $1400 price tag could be a bit steep, but it is often offered for sale to make it more affordable. The unit looks great and the base station takes up only a tiny space in the corner of an area.

The design of this robot addresses a few problems that we've encountered with other robotic vacuum and mop units, like the brushes getting caught in hair, or the brush not being able to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The sweeping capabilities are impressive on carpets and flooring. The vacuum/mop features an excellent level of debris collection and the mop can quickly soak up bare floors.

The mops utilize a clever system that cleans along the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot can handle the largest obstacles such as toys, food bowls, shoes, and backpacks without any problem. But it can get stuck or entangled with smaller and more compact objects like shoelaces, USB cables, and pen.

We used this robot to clean and mop a mix of pile rugs, FLOR carpet tiles and hardwood floors within a large, open house floor plan. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped a 90m2 space in around 170 minutes that's close to the average for Gen 4.

Certain features differentiate this robot from others in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software and hardware improvements designed to keep it at the top of its category. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments of up to 260m2.

Freo's app allows you to modify various functions, such as how often the robot goes to the base station. You can also alter the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent or intelligent), or the mopping humidity. The app can detect heavily stained areas and design an effective cleaning route. It can also distribute detergent and raise the carpet pads.

Other impressive features include a simple-to-read display on the robot's underside and a dock door that is convenient to open. The Freo X Ultra is the most efficient vacuum and mop for home or apartment owners who want to cut down on their chores while still keeping their home clean and tidy.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele is a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the world of robot vacuuming. This new model is designed to elevate the cleaning capabilities to a new level, with its innovative features.

The RX3 features a dual-suction system smart mapping system that includes 3D mapping as well as a camera which transmits live images to your smartphone. The RX3's powerful four-stage system provides excellent dust collection on hard floors and carpets. Side brushes that can be swung out, dual suction channels and a user-friendly interface clean corners. The 8.5 cm height allows it to fit under furniture with ease, while front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate obstacles and thresholds with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test of how well it cleaned baking powder around corners and baseboards. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a bit weaker than some other robots, but it was able to move quickly and was quiet. It didn't mop, however, and its removable cleaning pads were difficult to attach and didn't deal with dried-on dirt.

Its app is a little on the basic side, lacking advanced features like multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It is compatible with Alexa however its voice commands aren't intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit flaky when it returns to the charging station following an exercise. Other robots can follow the wall or trace a previous route however, the RX3 stumbles around until it gives up.

We also had issues with the intelligent features of the device, such as its mapping feature and the digital stay-out zones. While it did a decent job of avoiding our shoes and furniture legs but it could easily be caught by cables and socks, and it was not able to manage the tassels on carpets. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it in our Best Buy list. With a decent price and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering in the event you're looking to find a smarter alternative to the traditional uprights.
